City of Newcastle (CN) is seeking a Landscape Designer to join our Parks and Recreation team, supporting the wellbeing of the community through the provision of places and spaces for active and passive recreation and protection of the natural environment.

In this rewarding and varied role you’ll support the Recreation Planning Coordinator in planning the future direction of CN’s Open Space and Recreation areas and will manage the planning and design of parks, coordinating suitable design outcomes that incorporate community consultation.

Drawing on your proven experience within a similar role, you’ll integrate modern landscape design principles to develop concept and detailed design plans and masterplans for community land within CN’s LGA, ensuring all planning and infrastructure projects meet the highest standards of WH&S, environmental sustainability, functionality and cost effectiveness.

Amongst other accountabilities, you’ll promote and facilitate opportunities for community groups to be involved in planning, will provide landscape design advice across the broader Parks and Recreation team, and will coordinate and manage contract work with external providers.

The essentials you’ll need:

  • Tertiary Qualification in Landscape Architecture (bachelor’s degree or equivalent) and/or significant relevant experience including project management experience.
  • Extensive experience and demonstrated competence in all aspects of managing complex projects in open spaces, including consultation, planning and programming, risk management, cost control, contract management, asset management, within a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • High level skills and experience in the interpretation and understanding of design documentation including architectural and landscape plans, specifications, tendering and preparing contract documentation.
  • Demonstrated experience in graphic and verbal presentations.
  • Establish and maintain a working relationship with relevant stakeholders.
  • The position requires to operate within a team in a political and sensitive environment.
  • Working knowledge of asset management principles and techniques and demonstrated knowledge and experience of relevant planning controls and legislative requirements.
  • Knowledge of procurement procedures, WH&S and relevant legislation and Australian Standards.
  • Class C Drivers Licence.

Other valuable skills you may have:

  • Horticulture Certificate.
  • High level of problem solving and negotiation skills in both internal and community environments, with a strong customer service focus.
  • High level of computer skills and experience using project management/design software.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct community consultation and stakeholder engagement.
