City of Newcastle (CN) is seeking a skilled Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanical Tradesperson to join our Property & Facilities team, providing the effective and timely delivery of refrigeration and air conditioning, and other mechanical services including maintenance and repair, to a diverse asset portfolio across the Newcastle LGA.

As the successful candidate you’ll be a self-starter who takes pride in their work and will be responsible for the delivery of maintenance, repair and replacement services, routine and programmed, to the HVAC, and other mechanical components of CN’s built assets. You’ll be accountable for both works and plans and will coordinate works by other internal and external service providers to ensure that regulatory and statutory obligations are met, and performance targets are achieved.

Additionally, you’ll be empowered to independently seek solutions to customer requests by way of design alternatives and cost estimates while having regard for energy consumption, relevant Australian Standards, codes of practice and regulations.

The essentials you’ll need:

  • Successfully completed Electro-technology Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Certificate Level III trade course or equivalent.
  • Possess ‘Qualified Supervisor’s Certificate – Refrigeration and / or Air Conditioning’, or equivalent, meeting NSW Department of Fair-Trading licensing requirement.
  • Possess an approved licence to purchase refrigerant gases (on behalf of the organisation).
  • Ability and commitment to perform work, either unsupervised or in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and experience working in a team-based environment.
  • Working knowledge of relevant WHS requirements of the position and a demonstrated commitment to the principles of workplace safety.
  • Prioritise and control works in accordance with the Integrated Management System (IMS) to satisfy safety, quality and environmental requirements.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills and a demonstrated commitment to customer service.
  • Current Class C Manual Driver’s License and NSW WHS Construction Induction Card (White Card).

Other valuable skills you may have:

  • Experience in the installation and operation of building management controls and systems (BMS) and preferably experience in using and programming Delta control systems.
  • Possess high level of trade proficiency and workplace knowledge and demonstrate initiative in identifying and resolving work problems independently over a period of time.
  • Other mechanical skills which support working on such items as city clocks, automatic gates and doors, mechanical actuators.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience working on chilled water plant.
  • Possession of trades qualification and licence to carry out electrical work.
